SNV commissioned Fast-Track Carbon to undertake a study on baseline consumption of cooking charcoal and wood in Cambodia. Charcoal measurements were performed in 33 cities and wood consumption in 63 villages. The study implemented surveys in 2,072 Cambodian households. The surveys were implemented between June and August 2014 by the local firm Angkor Research Consulting.

It is important to note that the study was applied only in households where the primary cooking fuels are charcoal and wood. Thus, households cooking primarily with other fuels like LPG or electricity are excluded from the study. Nonetheless, it was found that many study households use LPG and electricity as secondary fuels as will be shown below.

This document presents some of the most relevant metrics obtained in the survey. For comparison purposes, the data is divided between wood users and charcoal users. These populations vary significantly not only in terms of fuel usage, but also in socio-economic characteristics. However, some aspects such as the types and frequency of meals cooked are similar, highlighting socio-economic aspects and urban-rural location are important cooking fuel choice determinants.

This report provides the overview, key results and findings, and lessons learned of SNV Cambodia’s action research on aggressive health promotion of clean cookstoves in Cambodia. Methods used throughout the project include baseline research, Trigger Mapping, field research, concept testing, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and endline research.

The study was conducted in 5 communes of Kampong Chhnang province, including 1 control group, and 4 test groups. The purpose was to determine whether health messaging is an effective purchase driver for the ACE-1 cookstove. As per the parameters of the project, two health concepts exploring a positive and negative tone were developed. Campaign results show that the key driver for the sale of the ACE-1 cookstove were the individual traits of sales agents. In addition, the project showed that the campaign was successful in shifting attitudes towards the health implications of cookstoves. However, the sales results showed no trend across the two variables, tone (+/-) and level of collateral (basic/full), tested for generating sales.

The report also investigates some of the challenges faced during project implementation and lessons learned in replicating the project. The main challenge was the varying level of implementation from one sales agent to another. Challenges were addressed immediately during the campaign implementation, but considerations for the future include
recommendations regarding sales agent recruitment, the location, seasonality, and duration of the campaign, and the naming of the ACE-1 cookstove.

The study reveals important findings regarding the acceptance of a rocket stove technology in the Cambodian cooking culture, and offers recommendations to address potential barriers to adoption.

The principal objective of this study was to identify the target market and assess the commercial market potential for advanced biomass stoves. A mixed methodology was used, with a quantitative household survey and a set of qualitative focus group discussions. In addition secondary literature and national household statistics were used for the market segmentation. In the end, four validated primary target market segments were identified and one secondary market segment. This study was conducted by Emerging Markets Consulting (EMC).

The objective of the study is to determine the optimal fuel source for fan powered gasifier stoves, more specifically in this case for the Philips stove (model HD4012) (“Philips stove”), for cooks in Cambodia, and compare performances against baseline stove models. The stove has been tested with over 13 types of fuel, first qualitatively and then quantitatively through water boiling tests and controlled cooking tests.

Four locally available gasifier stoves and a traditional stove were selected and tested at the LHERE stove testing facility using a modified form of the version WBT 4.2.2. The stoves were tested for thermal efficiency, emissions of CO, PM2.5, time to boil, specific fuel consumption, time to burn off per batch and stove temperature safety. The laboratory results from emissions and efficiency testing and conclusions regarding usability of the stoves are presented in this report.

The intervention options section includes suggestions for removing barriers that currently prevent the creation of a thriving market for clean cooking solutions.

The studies for Cambodia were commissioned as part of a U.S. State Department/U.S. Agency for International Development ASEAN Development Vision to Advance National Cooperation for Economic Integration contract. Nexus-Carbon for Development managed the implementation of these studies.
